Whether it’s Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, or Kevin Durant, all of the world's best shooters have a well structured basketball shooting Workout routine that focuses on improving basketball shooting skills. The analytics show that shooting is the most important skill in basketball, not only does it increase the spacing on the court, but shooting is such a sacred skill because it doesn't require much athleticism nor does it require you to have harlem globetrotter level dribbling ability, the only thing you have to do is set, catch, and fire away, but wait! We all know it’s not that easy, the best shooters in the world practice relentlessly to perfect their basketball shooting workout to make shots at a high clip, so before you just get on the court and start chunking up shots like it’s no tomorrow, let’s give you some basketball shooting machine exercises that will turn you or your child into the next big thing!

Well, let’s slow down a second. I'm aware that not everyone just randomly owns a shooting machine, but I'll explain to you why purchasing one will be the best investment you will ever make in your life.

Benefits Of Owning A Basketball Shooting Machine

1. More Shooting Reps with a Basketball Shooting Workout

Maybe the best thing about a basketball shooting machine is the amount of shooting reps you get compared to having to run and chase your own rebound after every single shot, trust me i know how exhausting and frustrating it can be to get your own rebounds, a shooting workout can quickly turn into a unwanted cardio session in a  moment's notice. However, with a shooting machine you avoid that completely. The thought of just standing in the same spot and not having to worry about anything other than shooting is a basketball player's dream, not only will it keep you more engaged in your shooting workout, but you will be using your time more efficiently and effectively. With a shooting machine you can get up hundreds of shots in an hour of work, but on the flip side, if you don't have one or a partner to get your rebound you’ll be lucky to even shoot 50 quality shots, and that's if you don’t pass out from exhaustion!

2. Workout Anytime

A basketball shooting machine allows for players to train themselves without being dependent on someone else. Having a personal basketball trainer is great and strongly recommended, however, you can only workout with your trainer a limited amount of days and hours per week. Which means you are leaving many unused hours on the table that could be used to skyrocket your development much further. A basketball shooting machine will allow you to replicate a week long workout routine similar to the professional players, on the days you aren't with your trainer or coach you can still be improving your skills.

3. Build Muscle Memory

If you’ve ever watched Stephen Curry shoot the basketball you’ll notice that he shoots with a unique effortless flow, the same can be said for all great shooters. They don’t have to think about anything once the basketball and their hand collide, they simply catch the basketball and try to put it in the hoop. Well, that’s from the perspective of the player, but from fans like myself on the outside looking in, we see picture perfect form down to the last detail, but of course the best shooters aren't thinking about every small detail, and that's because they have developed something called “muscle memory.” Muscle memory is developed through repetition, when you do something over and over again it becomes second nature, for example, walking, that doesn't require you to think much now does it? That’s muscle memory. It’s no different in the world of sports, especially when shooting a basketball. A basketball shooting machine allows you to shoot over and over again in a short amount of time, eliminating the time you have to think and process, which will translate to the actual game a lot better.Basketball is a fast paced game, and there is alot of chaos that surrounds us, therefore clouding our judgment leading to mistakes, that’s why playing off of instinct  and muscle memory is so important. It’s incredibly more difficult to develop muscle memory when you're chasing your own rebound after every shot, for every second you chase after your rebound, you could have got up at least 3 or 4 shots using a shooting machine, sounds like a no brainer to me.

Basketball Shooting Workouts

Here are 3 drills you can add to your basketball practice routine with your basketball shooting machine

1. Balance Shooting Series

This drill is focusing on improving your balance as a shooter, why is that important?  Well, for starters when you're balanced it builds consistency.  Good balance also ensures that your shot mechanics are the same every rep. balance can also improve your shot accuracy, helping align your body with the rim, because when you’re off balance the chances of your shot being misdirected is very high, making it harder to aim your shot accurately.  Lastly, being properly balanced allows you to generate optimal power on your shot, which decreases your shot's chances of being short or airballing.

DRILL

Objective: Training Your Balance

How do you do it? This basketball shooting workout drill will be made up of a series of 3 different moves you will do consecutively. The first move you will do is something called “shooting hops” . You perform this by catching the ball from the machine and hopping in two directions before shooting your jumpshot. You can jump any direction in the forward, backward, and lateral plane. For example, when you catch the ball you can take a big leap forward and then a big leap back then shoot the basketball, again, you can jump in any direction such as left to forward, or back to right, be creative and mix it up. This really trains your ability to be in sync and remain perfectly balanced in chaotic situations, resembling an actual game which is indeed chaotic and unpredictable. For the next move, you will begin by standing sideways to your basketball shooting machine, with your chest pointing away from it, then as the shooting machine spits out the basketball you will quickly hop and rotate your body towards the machine as you catch the basketball and shoot a jump shot. The last move of the 3 move series is something called “split stance jumpshots.” to complete this move you first have to start in a split stance position, with one foot in front of your body, and the other behind your body, sort of like a traditional lunge stance but without bending all the way down. As the basketball comes out of the machine and hits your hands you will quickly readjust your feet back to your normal shooting stance before shooting a jumper.

Remember - you will do these 3 moves consecutively,  it will really challenge your balance and footwork!

2. Shooting under pressure

This drill is focusing on your ability to shoot under pressure in real game situations. One common problem most players of all ages share is that they can easily make shots when practicing by themselves but have a completely different result in actual games. That's because when you're by yourself there is no pressure or external forces as you're shooting, in a game the anxiety of your teammates calling for the ball, your coaches barking out orders, or someone of importance to you simply being in attendance can cause a suffocating amount of pressure that can drastically affect how you perform on the court. However, there are ways you can train to be better in these situations, yes even by yourself!

DRILL

Objective: Training Balance And Ability To Shoot Under Pressure

How do you do it? This basketball shooting drill is part of an advanced basketball shooting workout and is made made up of a series of 2 different moves, one simulating a transition pull up three pointer and the other simulating you backpedaling to the three point line into a jump shot. For the first move, start at a reasonable distance from the shooting machine, and as the ball spits out of the machine, run towards it before shooting a jump shot. For the last move, stand a few feet from your shooting machine, and slowly backpedal before the ball comes out then as the ball finally comes out back pedal a little faster until the ball hits your hands then shoot your jumper. Here's the twist, for this drill you will shoot 15 shots, in order to complete it you have to make at least 8 out of 15 to complete the drill, for everytime time you don't reach that goal you have to do 10 pushups and/or 30 seconds of a plank hold, or a 30 second wall sit hold, whatever is most challenging for you! By giving a consequence, This creates pressure during the drill, every shot counts, and the pressure only builds as you get closer and closer to 15, it’s a fantastic drill!

3. Conditioning

This drill is focusing on your conditioning as part of your basketball shooting workout routine, improving your ability to shoot while feeling fatigued. It's not a coincidence that the greatest shooter of all time is also known as the most conditioned basketball player of all time,  Stephen Curry is admired by his peers and fans alike for his brutal yet effective conditioning shooting drills that involve him sprinting and shooting for what seems like hours on end. The best shooters in basketball are able to run around nonstop on offense by running around screens to free themselves up for a jump shot while  tiring out their defender in the process.  Stephen Curry is unstoppable for that reason alone, so if you want similar success you need this last drill for sure!

DRILL

Objective: Conditioning And Shooting While Fatigued

How do you do it? This basketball shooting drill will only require one object such as a chair, shirt, or even a water bottle. To start this drill, you will stand directly in front of the shooting machine at a distance that resembles a three pointer or a mid range jumpshot. When the ball comes out of the machine, quickly shoot the basketball before sprinting and touching the object of your choice, then as you touch it hurry and sprint back to the shooting machine before it shoots out another basketball, and continue this for 1 minute straight, or just adjust the time based on your fitness level. You want to place the object around 10 to 20 yards away from the shooting machine, this way it'll really encourage you to hustle and give yourself a challenge.

These 3 drills challenge the main qualities that all elite shooters need, adding these to  your basketball shooting routine will lead to fast results, but one question I'm sure a lot of you have right now is “where do i find a basketball shooting machine” luckily i have the perfect answer, hoopfit!
